What is MEND in Schools?

MEND in Schools is a multicomponent healthy lifestyle programme incorporating healthy eating, physical activity, oral health and behaviour change.

Our innovative approach engages primary school children over a 36-week syllabus of fun and interactive sessions focusing on key health messages, empowering children to make informed decisions influencing their health and wellbeing, both now and in their adult life.

In addition to supporting positive health outcomes, MIS assists children to develop their physical literacy, self-confidence, decision making and communication with others.

A three-phase approach

Phase 1: Introduction to healthy eating and physical activity

Introduces children to healthy behaviours including:

  • Eating your 5 a day
  • Drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day
  • The importance of sleep
  • Good oral health
  • Achieving 60 active minutes every day

Phase 2: Mental wellbeing and healthy eating

Focuses on mental, social and emotional wellbeing:

  • Communication
  • Expressing emotions
  • Resilience and Growth Mind-Set
  • Confidence
  • Motivation and Commitment
  • Concentration and Focus

Phase 3: Sports sessions and cooking classes

Sports include carefully managed competitive activities, facilitated in a sensitive way that challenges the children who need challenging, while supporting and encouraging those who are less able or confident.

Sports sessions:

  • Develop physical literacy
  • Maximises opportunities for success
  • Introduce new skills & rules of play

Cooking classes:

  • Develops life skills
  • Encourages healthy eating
  • Teaches food hygiene
