Hannah's 10K Swim Mission

Biggin Hill lifeguard, 22-year-old Hannah Gurney is on a mission this month, swimming 10k during November to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Hannah has always been a water baby and used to swim for a club when she was younger, as well as swimming as part of the social team during her first year of university. Keen to start swimming more, Hannah decided a charity swim was the perfect motivation – getting her back into the pool whilst raising valuble money for a really good cause.

“My family has been affected by cancer and so many others I know have too, so Ive been keen to raise money towards beating cancer. I've never done a charity swim before, but I did Race for Life and when I was 12, and I grew my hair out before having it chopped into a bob for The Little Princess Trust when I was 16 too,” says Hannah, who has been working at Mytime Active’s Biggin Hill pool for four years.

Initally Hannah was hoping to raise about £100, but donations are flooding in and now Hannah has set a new target of £500. “People have been extremely generous and kind,” she says. “Most of my donations have come from my family and friends. However lots of Mytime Active customers have donated too, even people I don’t know, which is just so kind.

Last Sunday Hannah reached the halfway mark on her swim. She says: “Im doing around 1.25 kilometres, roughly 50 lenghts, twice a week to ensure I can fit work, the gym and everything else around it. As time goes on I’ve noticed I've become faster and it’s definitely feeling easier the more I swim.”

Anyone wishing to donate via Hannah’s sponsored swim can do here.
