Mytime Active Stories - Rosie

Rosie is a 32-year-old dental therapist who works with the Special Care Department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. She is currently on maternity leave with her first child, Maisie.

Prior to having her seven-month-old daughter, Rosie, who lives in Shortlands, Bromley, was a regular gym-goer, and she was keen to return to a fitness routine after receiving the post natal all-clear from her healthcare professional.

She explains: “Exercise has always been an important element of how I manage my overall wellbeing. The transition to motherhood is a significant life change for anyone and being a new mum can be really overwhelming at times, so it was important to me that I could get back to exercise and be able to bring my daughter along too.

Rosie began attending Mytime Active’s specialist Me & My Baby Fitness classes at The Spa at Beckenham. She says: “The classes are fantastic; it’s a relaxed environment that provides a much-needed motherhood break for 45 minutes – just coming to the class makes me feel a bit like my old self again. It’s a great opportunity for me to meet other mums in the area too"“The instructor, Sam, is incredibly knowledgeable and provides helpful adaptations and modifications specifically for postnatal women. The functional training sessions often include exercises such as using ropes, squat stations and the SkiErg. We all love the boxercise station, where we let out our frustrations about our lack of sleep. Maisie and the other babies are kept safe and happy, often resting on soft mats dubbed the ‘Baby Island’ or sleeping in their prams or car seats in the studio.

Rosie is actively working towards specific physical goals, including losing a little weight and ensuring her core strength returns after pregnancy. Crucially, the social aspect is just as important as the physical exercise. She says: “The classes’ relaxed atmosphere helps us to make friends easily, and the group often stays after the class to go for a coffee and a chat. Being with a baby all day can seem like a long day and coming to the class and hanging out afterwards really breaks it up.

Rosie would recommend the Me & My Baby Fitness classes to any new mums in the area and wishes there were more sessions on the timetable. She says: “I already take Maisie to the Spa’s swimming pool and, as she gets older, I plan to use some of the Spa’s other facilities such as the soft play. I really love the friendly classes and the routine it has given me during my maternity leave.”
