Case study: This Girl Can Swim

The Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) is a voluntary home visiting programme for first time young mums, aged 19 years or under.

They identified that key barriers to physical activity participation by this group included: lack of childcare, low body confidence following their birth, lack of knowledge about leisure centres and services and low levels of water confidence.

FNP, in partnership with the Mytime Active Swim Coordinator, supports weekly mother and baby swim sessions, which are offered free of charge. After the swim session, we encourage our new mum participants to spend time with each other, over a coffee, to help build their support network and socialise with other mums who are in similar circumstances.

The programme was designed to address barriers and create an environment where women can swim without feeling judged or exposed.  With their increased confidence, self-esteem and motivation, individuals now feel able to participate in open classes and swim programmes, and also have reported improvements in physical health since they joined the group.
