Russian win for Bromley swimmers

Two young swimmers who train at West Wickham Leisure Centre recently returned from the European Junior Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia, as two of the 17 medallists from the GB team.

Tamryn Van Selm and Evelyn Davis, both 15 and from Bromley Swimming Club, were selected to represent Great Britain following their exceptional performances at the British Championships in Glasgow earlier this year.

The two young athletes were thrilled to make their first international team and to be competing against some of the best junior talent Europe has to offer.

Evelyn Davis held off the German team to take third place for GB, swimming the freestyle leg of the Women’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay in a personal best time of 55:52 .

Tamryn’s medal success came on the final night of the five-day meet in the women’s 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay. Again swimming a personal best time, Tamryn went in second and moved the team up to first place with a 1.59.65.

The team finished second overall behind Russia. This is a huge achievement, especially as they were one of the youngest teams competing.

Both girls also swam in Individual events in the 17 and under category. Tamryn finished 8th in the 100m freestyle while Evie reached the semifinal, and Tamryn made the semifinal for the 200m freestyle. They both have another two years in this age category so the future is looking very exciting!

As well as being a great experience for both athletes, it is also a fantastic achievement for the club, which has been steadily rising through the ranks for the past ten years. Head Coach David Court said:

“These achievements represent the pinnacle of 121 years of Bromley SC’s history so far. We are all very proud of the girls and pleased to have created an environment from which these results are possible.”

Both swimmers will fly out to Baku next week to represent GB for the second time in the European Youth Olympic Festival.
